This year we were proud to present the following keynote speakers from six different countries.
Fredag 8 november / Friday November 8th
Fladdermöss och skogsbruk / Bats and Forestry
Introduction:
Bats and Forestry: A Struggle for Both the Public and Private Sector
Niklas Paulsson, Sweden
About: An ecologist trained on boreal ecosystems, but also later on behavioural ecology with a focus on cooperative mechanism. Now works for the Swedish Forest Agency (Skogsstyrelsen) on a broad range of topics, both in the field, as well as on his PC.
Boreal Bats in a Changing Forest Landscape
Reed McKay, Norway
About: Post doctoral researcher with BatLab Norway at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences in Ås. Her research is currently focused on studying bat community dynamics and bat activity in the boreal forest system as well as addressing the impacts of wind energy infrastructure on bat communities. She is passionate about science communication and promoting an inclusive, accessible scientific bat working community.
Four Seasons: Understanding the Seasonal Ecology of Forest-Dwelling Bats
Kati Suominen, Finland
About: Postdoctoral visiting researcher in the BatLab Finland research group at the Finnish Museum of Natural History, University of Helsinki. She completed her Ph.D. on the summer ecology of the northern bat (Eptesicus nilssonii), with a focus on the species' spatial and temporal activity patterns, roost site selection, and thermoregulatory behavior. Kati is deeply passionate about bat ecology and conservation, aiming to contribute to the protection and management of bat populations through her research. In addition to her academic work, she currently serves as an environmental specialist in the private sector, where she actively integrates and communicates the latest scientific research to inform industry practices.
Contrasting Responses of Bats and Macro-Moths to Structural Complexity in Forest Borders
Heather Wood, Sweden
About: Bat researcher at Stockholm University studying the effects of habitat and climate on Swedish bat populations. She is a trustee in BatLife Europe, the coordinator of the International Collaboration working group in BatLife Sweden, and represents both organisations at UNEP Eurobats.
Fladdermöss och kompensationsåtgärder / Bats and compensation measures
Introduction
Johan Rydlöf from the Swedish Traffic Agency (Trafikverket)
Roost Compensation Measures for Bats: Experience from Scotland and the UK
Robert Raynor, United Kingdom
About: Worked as a species advisor and mammal specialist for NatureScot (formerly Scottish Natural Heritage) for 30 years, dealing with conservation management issues associated with bats and other terrestrial mammals throughout Scotland. Bats have formed a major part of his work over the years from undertaking roost visits in the early days to managing Nature Scot’s EBLV active surveillance programme between 2005 and 2010 and then overseeing projects such as the Southern Scotland Bat Survey, the analysis of Scottish bat population trends and production of the British bats and onshore wind turbines guidance. Advising on mitigation measures including artificial roost design remains a key part of his work. Rob is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM) and is involved with the work of the Eurobats Advisory Committee.
Changing Climates: Challenges for Bats in Zero-Carbon Buildings
Erik Korsten, The Netherlands
About: Bat specialist and National Coordinator of Bat Hibernation Counts at the Dutch Mammal Society. Involved in bat conservation since 1998. Working as a professional bat worker in legal bat surveys and bat research since 2006, with a special interest in the history and application of bat houses and other artificial roosts. Now more focused on training future bat professionals and education on nature-inclusive buildings.
Offseting Windfarm Impact in the Light of Bat Demographic Constraints
Christian Kerbiriou, France
About: After 10 years working as a Park Manager, he joined the National Museum of Natural History, first as a research engineer to develop citizen-science biodiversity schemes and since 2009, as an Assistant Professor in Conservation Biology. He co-manages the French Bat Monitoring: a volunteer-based survey based on standardized acoustic survey. His recent research focuses on assessment of different pressures (light pollution, agriculture intensification, roads, renewable energies) on bats populations.
This year's Swedish bat conference will be taking place in Helsingborg at the Helsingborg Arena from the 8th to the 10th of November 2024.
